Beginners Guide
Embarking on your first horse riding adventure can be both exhilarating and a bit intimidating. At Plasie, we want to ensure that your experience is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. Whether you're new to riding or simply looking to enhance your skills, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to ride a horse, with tips to make your ride comfortable and fun. This guide is perfect for horse riding for beginners as well as seasoned riders looking to brush up on their skills.
Greet Your Horse: Before you even think about mounting, take a moment to introduce yourself to your horse. Approach the horse calmly and gently. Speak softly and offer your hand for the horse to sniff. Rub its nose and neck to build trust and establish a friendly connection. This simple act helps the horse feel more comfortable with you and makes the riding experience more enjoyable.
Choose the Right Mount: Ensure that the horse you’re riding is well-trained and suitable for beginners. At Plasie, our horses are carefully selected and trained to provide a smooth experience for riders of all levels.
Mounting the Horse: Stand on the left side of the horse. Use the mounting block if available. Place your left foot in the stirrup and, holding the reins and the saddle, swing your right leg over the horse. Gently settle into the saddle.
Sit Properly: Sit upright with your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Your legs should hang naturally, with your heels slightly down. This position helps you maintain balance and control.
Relax and Communicate: A relaxed rider is a more effective rider. Gently hold the reins and communicate with your horse through your posture and leg pressure, not through kicking or pulling.
Guiding the Horse: Use the reins to guide the horse, but do so gently. Pulling too hard can make the horse nervous. Instead, use subtle movements to steer and adjust your speed.
Slowing Down: To slow down, gently pull back on the reins while sitting back in the saddle. This action communicates to the horse that it should reduce its pace. Avoid sudden or harsh pulls, as these can startle the horse.
Avoid Kicking: Kicking the horse can cause it to gallop or become agitated. If you want the horse to move forward, use gentle leg pressure. If the horse is not responding, give it a moment and then try again with more encouragement.
Boots: If you don’t have specific riding boots, wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with a small heel to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup. Avoid sneakers or sandals.
Leggings and Socks: Opt for comfortable, flexible leggings that won’t chafe. Wear socks that are long enough to prevent any friction between your legs and the saddle.
Perfume: Avoid wearing strong perfumes or colognes. Horses have sensitive noses, and strong scents can be unsettling for them.
Hard Hat: We provide hard hats for your safety. Always wear one to protect your head in case of a fall.
At Plasie, our horse-whisperer plays a crucial role in preparing our horses for your ride. Before your outride, our expert will lunge the horse in a ring. This process helps the horse expend excess energy and ensures it is calm and focused, providing you with a more pleasant and controlled experience.
A well-prepared picnic adds a delightful touch to your horse riding adventure. Bring along a tasty snack to enjoy during your ride. At Plasie, we offer picnic options to enhance your experience. Our delicious treats can be enjoyed either during or after your ride, making your outing even more memorable.
Horse Riding for Kids: At Plasie, we offer specially tailored rides for children. Horse riding for kids is a fantastic way for young ones to develop confidence and balance. Our ponies are gentle and perfect for first-time young riders.
Horse Riding for Beginners: Whether you're an adult or a child new to riding, our sessions are designed to cater to beginners. We ensure a supportive environment where you can learn how to ride a horse with ease and enjoyment. Our instructors provide gentle guidance and tips to help you gain confidence and skill.
Stay Relaxed: Horses can sense your mood, so staying calm and relaxed will help your horse feel at ease. Take deep breaths and enjoy the ride.
Communicate with Your Horse: Establish a bond with your horse through gentle touches and calming words. This will help create a trusting relationship between you and your mount.
Enjoy the Moment: Focus on the scenery and the rhythm of your horse’s gait. Horse riding is as much about enjoying the experience as it is about the ride itself.
